Burn It Down
03:10
|
|||
The legend of the firebird
Is one of transformation
If you dare to take the journey
And you give the wolf his due
Let the flame inspire
For you are your own creation
Throw your fear upon the pyre
And let it rise as something new
So you think you don't burn bright enough?
I tell you it's not true
Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down
Throw your fear upon the fire and burn it down
Throw your voice out to the wind
Feel the heat upon your skin
As you hunger, so begin
Burn it down
Last night you were dreaming
But you cannot quite remember
It's all dark and misty-seeming now
Like patterns in the sand
Wake to comets streaming
Kindled from a lonely ember
All your wishes colored gleaming
Are the stars held in your hand
Let them soar and let them smolder
May they never fall to land
Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down
Throw your fear upon the fire and burn it down
Throw your stars into the sky
Let the darkness hear your cry
Teach the cinders how to fly
Burn it down
Voices whisper, "never"
Fear the fire will turn to ash
And they would hold you back forever
To protect you from the pain
A single blazing feather
Holds the heat of all your passion
Bring your head and hands together
Only hear the heart's refrain
Burn away the haunted shadows
It's your love that will remain
Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down
Throw your fear upon the fire and burn it down
Throw your heart into the song
Feel the rhythm hot and strong
And the fire will sing along
Burn it down
Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down
Throw your fear upon the fire and burn it down
Throw your heart into the song
Feel the rhythm hot and strong
Hear the fire sing along
Burn it down

Missing Part
04:53
|
|||
Cast off, sail away
Maybe I'll be back someday
It don't seem likely, but it's anything can be
Mama, Daddy, don't you cry
You always knew that I'd say goodbye
I got a beauty of a berth on a ship just made for me
She's the sweetest little darlin' that you'll ever find
A wee bit battered but the best of her kind
And she'll run forever with a good hand on her heart
I'm a little out of place when I'm on the ground
And that's the reason why I'm outward bound
Oh, can't you see that I'm a Firefly's missing part?
Time's up, have to run
I can't sit idle when there's work needs done
You raised me right and you know I'll make you proud
You both know that I'll be fine;
This world's for you, but the whole sky's mine
And I'll go just as far as an engineer's allowed
On the sweetest little darlin' that you'll ever find
A wee bit battered but the best of her kind
She'll run forever with a good hand on her heart
I'm a little out of place when I'm on the ground
And that's the reason why I'm outward bound
Oh, can't you see that I'm a Firefly's missing part?
What's the point in havin' wings if you never leave the nest and fly?
What's the point in havin' dreams if you never reach out for the sky?
I'll never know my limits if I never even try
You ain't raised no farmer's wife, you've raised the mechanic of a Firefly!
Big sky, bigger plans
I'm doin' what my heart demands
I'm gonna treat that engine sweet, and she'll take me far
When folks wonder after me
Just say I found Serenity
Where the sky ain’t the limit, I'll be shining like a star
Cause this Firefly's the place that I'll make my home
And while she still flies, you know I'll still roam
So much to do, and now it’s time to start
I'm the kind of girl who loves the simple things
And I can hear the future when my darlin' sings
Oh, can't you see that I'm a Firefly's missing part?
She's the sweetest little darlin' that you'll ever find
A wee bit battered but the best of her kind
She'll run forever with a good hand on her heart
I'm a little out of place when I'm on the ground
And that's the reason that I'm outward bound
Oh, can't you see that I'm a Firefly's missing part?

I Hope You Don’t Mind
05:58
|
|||
It's quiet in the sea, always flotsam drifting down
But I'm not looking
Let it fall past me, bits of words and strains of music
I can't listen
Chart your course and plot your days, and I can hide beneath the waves
Find a message in a bottle, wonder if it's meant for me
And I hope you don't mind
No, I hope you don't mind
It's quiet in the sky, always movement far below
but I'm not looking
Let it pass me by, lines on maps and traffic patterns
I can't follow
Sirens don't go chasing prey, they just hope that you'll sail in one day
I'll show you round my little kingdom, offer you a cup of tea
And I hope you don't mind
No, I hope you don't mind
I could trace your pathway in the tides, I could read your story in the stars
I could catch your singing on the winds, all they ever tell me
Is that you’re not here
And when I fall to land there are gifts and souvenirs
but I’m not buying
They don’t understand how the sea and sky can hurt you
without trying
Someone has to keep the lighthouse, and someone has to be the stone
I don't need to keep you here, but I don't want to know you're gone
So I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind

Likho’s Lullabye
02:57

Баю-баюшки-баю
Не ложися на краю
Придёт серенький волчок
Он ухватит за бочок
И утащит во лесок
Под ракитовый кусток
Sleep, my girl, and dream of home
Of lamps alight and hearth aflame
A china cup, a silver comb
An old grey wolf for you to tame
A rider come who knows your name
Баюшки-баю, Машенка
За тебя приду, Машенка
Don't you know the story that the babushki all spin?
You'll walk the groove into the world, you'll end where you begin
Only let the story in
Sleep, my girl, and dream of death
Of silver shadows sweet and cool
Of summer's fire and winter's breath
Between the devil and the fool
The only choice is who shall rule
Баюшки-баю, Машенка
За тебя приду, Машенка
There is always a Yelena, there is always an Ivan
Share your heart with gods and devils, share your secrets with a swan
Ах! The world you know is gone
Sleep, my girl, and dream of life
Of pretty maids and handsome birds
Of what it means to be a wife
Of battles hinged upon a word
Now hush, it's just the wind you heard

"When you turn out all the lights
When you lock up for the night
We come out to play"
They're lurking in the corners on the ceilings and the walls
They're jumping on the guest bed and they're running in the halls
They watch you type your password, they know where you keep your keys
And they're turning up your thermostat by one or two degrees
They're playing Spider Solitaire and reading all your files
They're logging on your blogging sites to change your default styles
They're typing editorials with libertarian slants
And they're turning on your Xbox to play Rock Band with the ants
"You know we've got a lot to do,
So if you'd just put down that shoe
We'll be on our way."
They're looking into real estate (it's all about location)
They used to lift your free weights 'til that slight miscalculation
They're barbecuing tiny little steaks on your Hibachi
And drafting solemn essays in salute to Fibonacci
They raid your liquor cabinet, though they're not of age to drink
They're staging tango competitions in the kitchen sink
They're critiquing your new painting (your perspective's off, they say)
And they're analyzing your décor for optimal feng shui
"You know we're really not bad guys.
Remember Egypt and the flies?
We're just saying."
They're going through your songbooks and composing extra verses
They're making use of Babelfish to translate Russian curses
They're borrowing your favorite socks (they're sure you wouldn't mind)
And they're working on your steering since your wheels got misaligned
They're singing German arias (their pitch is wunderbar)
They're studying philosophy (they think, therefore they are)
They're reading your old math books, learning vector and diameter
And writing epic poetry in iambic octameter
"Hey we're just trying to get along.
If we had pants, we'd put them on
One leg at a time, at a time, at a time, at a time, at a time"

Dawson’s Christian
05:34
|
|||
Jayme Dawson was the Captain of the Christian and her crew
And he flew and fought the Christian in the War of '82
Now the Christian was the finest ship 'tween here and Charlemagne
And the crew of Jayme Dawson was the same
On patrol in sector seven, keeping watch on Barber's sun
They were jumped by three light cruisers though they were no match for one
As they came to general quarters and they sent out the alarm
Jayme must have known they'd finally bought the farm
Now they say that Jayme Dawson was no man to cut and run
And they say that when he fought he had the fury of a sun
But they say he made his bargain with some power of the night
That he sold his soul to win his final fight
No one living saw that battle though the fleet was quick to leave
But at the site they found a scene no sane man would believe
Three light cruisers cut to ribbons, wreckage scattered all around
But no trace of Dawson's Christian could be found
There are stories of the Dutchman, the Celeste and Barnham's Pride
There are stories of the Horseman and the Lady at his side
But the tale that makes my blood run cold, the more because it's true
Is the tale of Jayme Dawson and his crew
Yes, the tale of Dawson's Christian and her crew
I was second mate on Hera's Dream, a freighter of the line
Running loads of precious metals to the colony on Nine
I was standing second watch of that most uneventful flight
When the pirate ships appeared out of the night
Well I thought our fate was settled, for they had us four to one
And you can't fight bloody pirates when your freighter has no gun
So we stood by to be boarded by a party yet unseen
When another ship appeared upon our screen
First I thought she was a pirate, but the vector was all wrong
Then I thought the fleet had found us, but the signal wasn't strong
And our hailing brought no answer, and I felt a sudden dread
For the stranger's shields were up and glowing red
Now the courage of that single ship is shown by very few
And I thought none but a madman would fly her as she flew
She was outgunned, she was outnumbered, but a cheer came from our lips
When she swung to fire on the pirate ships
And the stranger's beams burned brighter than all beams I'd seen before
And the stranger's shields were harder than the heart of any whore
And the battle rent the ether, as we watched and shook our heads
Four pirate ships she cut to bloody shreds
Four pirate ships were cut to bloody shreds
Just as quickly as it started then the fighting was all done
For the pirate ships were shattered and the stranger's ship had won
She matched v and lay beside us, and we watched her full of awe
Then she dropped her shields and this is what we saw
There were thirty holes clear through her and a gash along one side
And we knew that when it happened, every soul on board had died
Then she rolled to show her markings, and we read them and we knew
The fate of Jayme Dawson and his crew
She was the Christian... and a grave for all her crew
Then she turned as if to leave us, but instead began to fade
First her hull, and then her bulkheads, as we trembled there afraid
But there are twenty men who'll swear with me, the last to slip from view
Were the bones of Jayme Dawson and his crew
Dead white bones of Jayme Dawson and his crew
There are stories of the Dutchman, the Celeste and Barnham's Pride
There are stories of the Horseman and the Lady at his side
But the tale that makes my blood run cold, 'cause I know that it's true
Is the tale of Jayme Dawson and his crew
Yes, the tale of Dawson's Christian and her crew
They're out there... Jayme Dawson and his crew!

It was sixteen years ago, outside an aging movie show
I was found not knowing where I was that night
Not a thing did I possess but an old blue gingham dress
And a faded photograph in black and white
Now my memories are quite clear, even if I still can hear
All the shrinks who said some trauma was to blame
Light another cigarette, breathe in deep, try to forget
That it's a photograph of Dinah and that Alice is my name
Save me, save me, I've lost my memory
I'm outside the world looking in
Save me, save me, I'm lost in the memory
And I'd swear I'm a girl that's never been
Now it's all the life I knew, except I know it can't be true
I'm not her, there's no such thing as Wonderland
Hold a steady job somehow, three months clean and sober now
Oh, the ways I tried to get back there again
"Try to move on, don't be sad," so I place a personal ad
And ask, "why is a raven like a writing desk?"
And on the phone, out of the past, so glad he's found me now at last
And I'm afraid to go and meet him but I know my answer's yes
Save me, save me, I've lost my memory
I'm outside the world looking in
Save me, save me, I'm lost in the memory
And I'd swear I'm a girl that's never been
Just another city loner wearing sunglasses at night
Leather jacket, purple turtleneck and blue jeans worn too tight
Just a rummie by the jukebox in a casual curious pose
But I don't know how he knows the things he knows
Well he sits down with a grin, "Why little Alice, where've you been?
Not so little, not so Alice, now, are you?"
As he sips my untouched drink, I say "I can't be who I think."
He says "You are, and you're not, and I am too.
Are we figments of our gin? Are we long-lost orphaned kin?
Or the mad descendants of a writer's pen?
No one's sane behind their mask. Ask what you really want to ask."
And I close my eyes and whisper, "Can you take me back again?"
Save me, save me, I've lost my memory
I'm outside the world looking in
Save me, save me, I'm lost in the memory
And I'd swear I'm a girl that's never been
"Darling Alice, so bereft, there's no back, you never left.
All the rhymes are still there waiting to be sung."
And he holds up in the air a little picture paper square
Slips between my lips and underneath my tongue.
"Shall I tell you now, Miss Little, what's the answer to the riddle
Of the raven that you used to send your call?"
He takes the glasses off to see, yellow cat's eyes turns on me, and says,
"It's nothing like a writing desk at all."
Save me, save me, I've lost my memory
I'm outside the world looking in
Save me, save me, I'm lost in the memory
And I'd swear I'm a girl that's never been
And he faded, leaving nothing but a grinnnnnnnn

Anna
04:40
|
|||
Anna was eight when she built her first rocket
Her dad said her heart never came down again
When her friends pinned up Justin and Ben in their lockers
Fifteen-year-old Anna had Grissom and Glenn
Glued to her laptop, ignoring her thesis
She watched every mission, until the day when
Those noble old sisters were grounded forever
At twenty-two, it was the first time I'd known her to cry
She asked if I thought we would ever again learn to fly
She walked off her job on the day they announced
They were going back up after fifteen years' wait
The college professor drew snickers in training
"You're too old, you're too soft, it's too hard, it's too late"
Ah, but no one could ever tell Anna it's raining
Or stop her from being first out of the gate
And her family all said she should try
Was there doubt she would pass? She was top of her class
And they made her the offer to fly
In the gantry's tall shadow, her love said, "I'll miss you
But we both know your place is the sky
I'm standing behind you, when I need to find you
I just have to lift up my eyes"
And she kissed her brave lover goodbye
The missions came one on the heels of another
Farther and farther than ever before
The head of her crew and the pride of her family
Once tasted the stars, she could only want more
We were none of us shocked when they found a new system
And the call came for all volunteers to explore
She said she'd return, that we’d see her again
But I think that she knew
And she knew we did, too
That it was a lie
The day that Anna learned to fly

We Are Who We Are
06:58
|
|||
Do you remember the first time you learned
Monsters could be real?
Behind the teacher's back or behind closed doors
What their smiles could conceal
Sly little cruelties they denied
Betrayals of trust that ached inside
The ones that you turned to who replied
"Oh just ignore"
Did you find solace in stories
On the screen or on the page
Escape to another world, another age
Do you remember the first time you learned
Monsters could be slain?
The stories said the power could be yours
And that you could ease the pain
And sometimes the monster could be tamed
And sometimes you learned, when it was named
That sometimes the monster was the same
The same as you
The heroes and monsters together said,
"Come with us, you'll be safe and strong.
You are welcome as you are, where you belong."
(We Are) We are the lovers and the dreamers
And we will stand up, win or lose
(We Are) We are the children of the future
And we will make it what we choose
(We Are) We are creators of our own worlds
Every planet, every star
(We are) We don't need anyone to tell us
Who we are (we are who we are)
Did you imagine you'd ever find
A place where you could share
The stories and the songs and the many worlds
Before someone joined you there
Remember that all your loves are true
If anyone says it's not for you
Well just look around, you know what to do
You have a voice
We've all got a chair at the gaming table
And it's time for them to learn
We're here where we belong, and it's our turn
(We Are) We are the lovers and the dreamers
And we will stand up, win or lose
(We Are) We are the children of the future
And we will make it what we choose
(We Are) We are creators of our own worlds
Every planet, every star
(We are) We don't need anyone to tell us
Who we are (we are who we are)
It's gotta get better
We've changed the world, but we're far from done
We've gotta make it better
For everyone
It's gotta get better now
Hold your head up and be brave
You can't stop the signal now
So let's misbehave
Do you believe in a world
Where every person has a place
Where everyone can find their story
And see a reflection of their own face
Where nobody has to hide anymore
You know this is what our tales are for
To teach ourselves that there's so much more
That we can be
Until no one's voice is silenced
Until no one has to fear
We'll raise our voice, we'll draw the line right here
(We Are) We are the lovers and the dreamers
And we will stand up, win or lose
(We Are) We are the children of the future
And we will make it what we choose
(We Are) We are creators of our own worlds
Every planet, every star
(We are) We don't need anyone to tell us
Who we are (we are who we are)

Uplift
03:15
|

Hands chip the flint, light the fire, skin the kill
Feet move the tribe, track the herd, with a will
Mankind struggles in the cellar of history
Time to settle down, time to grow, time to breed
Plow tills the soil, plants the seed, pray for rain
Scythe reaps the wheat, to the mill, to grind the grain
Towns and cities spread to empire overnight
Hands keep building as we chant the ancient rite
Coal heats the steam, push the piston, turns the wheel
Cogs spin the wool, drives the horses made of steel
Lightning harnessed does our will and lights the dark
Keep rising higher, set our goal, hit the mark
Crawl out of the mud
Ongoing but slow
For the path that is easy
Ain't the one that lets us grow
Light, push the sails, read the data, cities glow
Hands type the keys, click the mouse, out we go
Our voices carry round the world and into space
Send us out to colonize another place
Hands make the tools, build the fire, plant the grain
Feet track the herd, build a world, begin again

We Can Be Anything
03:46
|
|||
Ivory, carnelian, tiger's eye, gold
Poets are creatures of habit, you know
But beauty that kindles a song or a story
Is surely old hat to you now
Tidal waves, tears, and the taste of ice cream
I lift up my veils and you show me your seams
We'll take on the guises of all of our dreams
In a dance bold and soft as a vow
We can be anything, anything
We can be anything
We can be anything
And your name is all crystal and sweet violin
When your fingers trace silent brocades on my skin
And the whole of my world is a mischievous grin
Looking up at the stars in your eyes
Summer is taken, oh, quite by surprise
By the autumn, and winter was never this warm
And I stand open-handed and soaked in your storm
I'll be your ingénue, you'll be my king
We can be anything, anything
We can be anything
We can be anything
And I'll fly through the snow and I'll stay up all night
Tie me in silk and hold on to me tighter
I'll try and I'll try until I get it right
And by touch mend the tears in my words
Teach me the language of angles and curves
But don't tell the secret you see in my face
When you watch me through layers of velvet and lace
You'll be the goddess, and I'll be the raven who sings
We can be anything
We can be anything
We can be anything
We can be anything
Ivory, carnelian, tiger's eye, gold
We poets are truly predictable, no?
But the role of the Muse who inspires the soul
Is surely old hat to you now

Just a Dream
04:08
|
|||
Dancing girls and caribou and men who climb the wall
You never know whose dreams are yours, you wake among them all
Shadows, colors, crawling, flying, follow where you go
You'll never be alone again, not since New Mexico
The dreams of men came out to play for all the world to see
But the accident that brought them out left just a few like me
We few who when we dream a flame, the fire really burns
We fewer still keep dreams inside so no one ever learns
Dreams can't hurt you, that's what parents used to say
But they changed the world forever in New Mexico that day
No one lived to tell the story of the vanished research team
All that's left to tell the tale is just a dream, just a dream
All that's left of them is just a dream
The bats are mine, the faces too, I know which come from me
I look for all the artifacts that no one else can see
When you can dream a meal, a woman, real without a doubt
You hold your dreams and hold your breath and hope they don't find out
The paper headlines rise to claim the dead & nightmare-scarred
Sometimes someone dreams too real, or someone dreams too hard
When hands can bleed and houses burn, when dreaming goes astray
They come for you, they send you North, for safety so they say
Dreams can't hurt you, that's what parents used to say
But they changed the world forever in New Mexico that day
No one sleeps and no one wakens, no one's ever what they seem
And the one you thought you knew was just a dream, just a dream
Yes the one you knew was just a dream
The television static shadows horns behind its glare
The magnets on the fridge have changed and all spell out "beware"
Some days you can't escape your dreams, some days you can't quite wake
Though the ringing is insistent, and the anger’s growing louder
I am sure the voice is only in my mind
The rain is falling inside and the carpet's getting wet
But I'm sure I'm only tired and control's not failed me yet
I wake from dreams of monsters caged and raging horn and claw
To the grim, official knocking of the agents of the law
They ask if I know anyone with hyperlucid dreams
They ask if I've been home alone, and did I hear the screams?
They say that I'm the only one alive in building three
They say they've got the dream contained and now they've come for me
Dreams can't hurt you, that's what parents used to say
But they changed the world forever in New Mexico that day
Someone else's dream can bite you, you imagine that you scream
But the pain you feel is still just a dream, just a dream
Yes the pain you feel is just a dream

Trouble
04:32
|
|||
You made a sensation
With your mad invitation
And a grin that I thought was meant for me
It shouldn't have shocked me
The way you unlocked me
Too late to run when I gave you the key
But I can't go on racin'
Just to keep the same place, and
Your glass shows you things I'll never be
So the cat's got your tongue now
You're up for some fun now
You still think that you can have your tea and more
Shoulda known
You're trouble
Shoulda known
You're trouble
You remember you know me
You forget what you owe me
Still hiding behind your garden wall
I face my reflection
My body's defection
I still want to come when I hear your call
Ah but that way's been taken
I've eaten my cake and
Already been broken by that fall
I'm done and I'm walking
But you, you're still talking
You think that I haven't heard it all before
Shoulda known
You're trouble
Shoulda known
You're trouble
Never know the time that I wasted
On treats I should never have tasted
You're sweeter than jam tomorrow
But you're never here today
I struggled to master
Every teacup disaster
There was always another storm to brew
How I followed you down, dear
Now you come back around, dear
And there's no path that leads away from you
Don't think I can't hear you
When you talk through the mirror
And the twisting that you believe is true
But you know your part now
I've played my last heart now
Just one sip and I'm right back through your door
Shoulda known
You're trouble
Shoulda known
You're trouble

The River
04:52
|
|||
Alright, okay, I give in
I can't fight and I can't move and I can't win
I'm staring at the pages 'til I hate every letter
And there's always someone else who has already said it better
And the lines all come out crooked and the words are upside-down
And there's never any room to turn around
So tell me a story, aren't all stories true?
Tell me a story and I'll tell it back to you
There's always someone else there, up the river, up the river
Got to find my own way up the river
Good luck, farewell, bon voyage
To the basement and the attic and garage
In the clutter of the world we keep on diving for our treasure
And with cobwebs in our hair we come parading for your pleasure
And it looks like all I've got's a broken lamp and one old shoe
Just wait 'til I recall what I can do
So tell me a story, aren't all stories true?
Tell me a story and I'll tell it back to you
There's always something out there, up the river, up the river
Got to find my way back up the river
Lullabye, stay awake, no one knows your great mistake
Cities, countries, castles, cats, and gentlemen in dashing hats
Straight & narrow path you you stray from, run a game & run away from
Home, where the heart is laughter, what comes after ever after?
Hit the road, hit the bottle, fear of flying, hit the throttle
Go! Didn’t you love that book? That day, the way the buildings shook
The man in the moon, man in space, lost a planet, lost a race
Sex and hate and joy and pain and love, love, love, love, love
Come on, take my hand, here we go
Through the woods and through the desert and the snow
Well I swear we got there last time but I don't remember how
And the map is lost, the road is gone, and what do I do now?
I’m slashing through the jungle word by word and line by line
You have to blaze a new trail every time
So tell me a story, aren't all stories true?
Tell me a story and I'll tell it back to you
There's always someplace calling, up the river, up the river
Got to find a new way up the river
